College Bowl Money Pits, Studying Abroad and More

It’s a relief to be sitting down to write this post. My husband, kids and I survived our annual holiday party. I cook for days, not including spending an entire Saturday making Christmas cookies, and by the time the party rolls around my back is screaming.
Anyway, I survived the party for 65 people and the [...]

Smart College Athletes, International Students and Flagships

Are college athletes getting smarter? That was the subject of one of my college blog posts for CBSMoneyWatch this week.
I don’t think college athletes are getting smarter, but they are graduating from college at higher rates. In fact, the jocks manage to graduate at higher rates than other college students. I was shocked to learn [...]

The Horrors of Student Loan Defaults, 529 Plan Tax Deductions and More

Winning Athletic Scholarships or Not

That’s what I’ve been telling my niece Molly, who is a [...]

Can You Afford a Private College? And Other College Blog Posts

I told you so!
That’s what I was thinking when I wrote one of my college blog posts last week for CBSMoneyWatch.com. With the media writing nonstop about how teenagers could only afford public institutions in this wretched economy, I must have looked like a lunatic when I insisted that private colleges could still be the [...]

How to Win a Sports Scholarship

Does your child have shot at a college athletic scholarship?
Having a daughter who plays varsity soccer in college, I know that parents secretly dream of the day that a Division I coach will call their house. A teenage jock faces a 2% chance of getting a Division I or Division II athletic scholarship. That doesn’t [...]

Going to College on an Athletic Scholarship

My biggest regret after finishing my book, The College Solution, was that I didn’t include a chapter about athletic scholarships. With the book’s deadline looming, I decided to skip writing about college sports scholarships. When my book goes into a second printing, I’ll be sure to add one.
I was reminded about my omission today [...]

March Madness & University Graduation Rates

During March Madness, I’ve been rooting for my alma mater – the University of Missouri.
I’ll be thrilled if Missouri wins its first national championship, but that wouldn’t keep me from feeling sorry for the school’s basketball players.
Only 25% of Mizzou’s basketball players ultimately graduate. And that pathetic number is hardly a fluke.
The Higher Ed Watch [...]
